And we so love that new episode smell, don’t we? Jane definitely loved more than that new car smell in this new installment of ‘The Mentalist‘, he
loved the politics of a popular and pricy dealership and had loads of fun analyzing and toying with the staff.

But what Jane probably loved most this week, which coincidentally is what I enjoyed most in the episode, is that he was able to make a friend!
Of course, Jane’s interest in Walter Mashburn was, at first, for the case. Even if Jane used Walter and his pricey yellow car to get to the bottom of this week’s case, Jane and Walter sort of developed a friendship.
I suspected from the start that Walter wasn’t the murderer — that’s because recognizable Kevin Rahm was playing another salesman and that the salesmen competition didn’t seem too healthy right from the start — but Walter still picked my interest as he called Jane a phony right from the start, Walter was cocky, loved being a suspect and knew which buttons to push to get Jane to come back. And he did come back. Of course, Walter asking Lisbon out was just icing on the cake!
As I’ve said before, Jane was mostly hanging out with Walter because of the case. But Walter and “Patrick” seemed to have way too much fun with one another for Jane to not start seeing Walter as a potential friend. Jane was showing Walter his tricks, which included a rocking scene where he drove blindfolded, and Walter used his cockiness and flashy lifestyle in return.
Walter enjoyed this new experience so much that he gave a car to Jane. I hope we see Walter in subsequent episodes. Jane can provide Walter the new experiences he seeks while Walter can be an excentric friend that calls it as he sees to Jane. Let’s admit it, Jane needs friends outside of CBI. What would also be interesting is that down the road, Walter comes back as a potential suspect and this time, all fingers do point in his direction. Jane would then have to investigate on a friend.
Meanwhile this week, Rigsby and Van Pelt’s relationship was put to the test when Lisbon told them she would have to report them to the powers that be and that one of them would have to transfer. This potential transfer had the couple think of the future, which included marriage, and they saw that they were not thinking alike.
At first, I thought that Rigsby and Van Pelt set up the argument they had at CBI for show so that others would think they were breaking up when in fact they would continue to secretely date. However, I’m not so sure about my theory anymore because when Lisbon told them she wouldn’t report them, they did look like they were done. At least, they were still mad at one another. I hope that in the end they find a way to patch things up and continue to secretly date because I loved those two together and we need a couple on the show, eh?
As for the case of the week, it gave loads of opportunities to Jane to use his unique skills. Even if I knew Rahm’s character was more than likely the murderer, I admit that a few times during the episode I wasn’t so sure due to the new clues that were uncovered. It’s always good not to know for sure before the opening credits who did the bad deed.
Next week, we have a Cho-centric episode! Yay! Some backstory for one of the most guarded CBI agent.

Jane Doe:- Late 20s-early 30s.. attractive, disheveled, engaging, likeable, she is suffering from amnesia after surviving an attempted murder. Yvette Brinton:- Early-Mid 30s, straight brunette hair, well-dressed, with roots to the reservation, she is the parole officer for the late Leonard Railton. “It’s a good rule of thumb to avoid doing things that require wearing a mask. And you’re such a handsome fellow too.” – Jane
“How’d you know I’m handsome?” – Jasper
OK, so The Mentalist is starting to hit some of the formula plots that all shows eventually get to. This one was the “someone is making a documentary about CBI and each person is interviewed and we learn more about them” episode. I could have done without it. I’d rather they concentrate on the main mystery rather than mix in this subplot. Or maybe the reason they had this documentary being filmed was because without it the mystery wouldn’t have been as interesting.
The good news? It was better than The Office clip show we had tonight. The bad news? It didn’t quite work.
Maybe I’m just being cranky. While watching this episode I not only had to think about (and review) the 30 Rock I had just watched, but I had to contend with the fact that I was missing both Burn Notice and Archer. Thursday nights is not Must-See TV now, it’s Can’t-Possibly-See-Everything TV, and it’s frustrating.
One aspect of the documentary plot I did like was that it brought out the anger in Jane, and we don’t see that enough. And I’m glad that the people making the documentary weren’t just faceless voices behind the camera, they actually became part of the story, interacting with Jane and the rest of the team. When did I realize that the filmmaker was the killer? At 10:49pm. There was something about the way they had a one second shot of Jane walking out of the room and looking back at the filmmaker. A very quick thing but something this show does a lot, and right then and there it clicked.
The first half of this episode was rather boring to me. Too much documentary, and not much interesting things going on (except for the well-staged fire in the office that took me by surprise). The second half was better, because it had some clever lines uttered by Jane as he was kidnapped and handcuffed to the chair and let it slip that he knew who the guy with the mask was. ” ‘In actuality’…who talks like that?” I love dialogue like that.
I thought Sharon Lawrence was criminally underused though. She had some feisty scenes with Jane and Lisbon in the first half of the episode but then pretty much vanished in the second half and we got an entire half hour of Jane and Jasper talking in the cabin. They should have given her more to do. But Simon Baker livens up even a so-so plot. Really, think about this show without a lead like him and I think a lot of the episodes would just lie there like moldy ham.

Who says you can’t mix business and pleasure? The Mentalist’s new boss (played by Aunjanue Ellis) certainly will.
“It’s another woman who’s going to flirt with Simon and have power over me,” Robin Tunney told TV Guide Magazine at the G’DAY USA 2010 Gala. “I don’t know if that’s going to go well. I think there’s going to be some jealousy and some power struggles. We’re all going to have difficulty with it.”
That’s not all Tunney’s character struggles with for remaining episodes. “The latter part of the season I’ll be grieving Bosco’s death and getting over that,” she said. “There’s more character development this season—so you’ll find out more about where she comes from and why she’s such a pain in the ass.”
And that pesky, homicidal Red John isn’t going anywhere! “It’ll be similar to last year where the character pokes his head every fifth episode,” she divulges. “We take two steps closer and two steps back…otherwise, the show’s over.”
Fortunately, this season is far from done.
As previously reported, Aunjanue Ellis is
coming on board The Mentalist at the new California Bureau of Investigation boss.
How will her character go over with Teresa Lisbon? Not too well, says Robin Tunney.
“It’s another woman who’s going to flirt with Simon and have power over me,” Tunney said to TV Guide Magazine. “I don’t know if that’s going to go well. I think there’s going to be some jealousy and some power struggles. We’re all going to have difficulty with it.”

As you might expect, this isn’t all Tunney’s character will be dealing with over the next few weeks.
“The latter part of the season I’ll be grieving Bosco’s death and getting over that,” she said. “There’s more character development this season – so you’ll find out more about where she comes from and why she’s such a pain in the ass.”
A pretty pain in the ass, at least.
As for Red John? That homicidal maniac isn’t going anywhere. Said the actress:
“It’ll be similar to last year where the character pokes his head every fifth episode. We take two steps closer and two steps back…otherwise, the show’s over.”
