The Mentalist – Terry Kinney Interview
Posted by: | CommentsRumors swirled that the return of serial killer Red John on the Nov. 19 episode of The Mentalist would claim a regular cast member. And sure enough, CBI agent Sam Bosco took a bullet. He lingered in the hospital for a spell, but after a few heart-to-hearts, his own ticker stopped for good. Here, actor Terry Kinney opens up exclusively to TV Guide Magazine about his too-short stint on CBS’s top ten hit.
My sympathies on your untimely demise. And to add salt to the wound, your killer turned out to be your devious secretary who was having an affair with Red John. Not Red John himself!
Well, Red John has highly influential minions. And it certainly seems that he’s a serial killer with money.
This was not a total surprise because you sort of let it be known that the role was temporary.
Yes. I knew going in that my demise was imminent. There was a sense of freedom for me because from the outset there was a finite nature. I just had to keep quiet about it.
What was the highlight of your time on the show?
Pretending that I don’t like Jane is fun because Simon and I actually hit it off very quickly. Both of us have an attention to detail and like to question every single moment. And we always like to be playful. When he realized that he couldn’t throw me off, he decided he was going to have fun working with me.
Shortly before he died, Bosco told Teresa (Robin Tunney) that he loved her. What was your interpretation of that admission?
I think all this time anyone watching might have thought they were hiding some kind of dirty secret or affair. And really, I think the beauty in the end is that nothing happened between them physically, but there was always an unspoken deep affection and love, which he never had the nerve to tell her.
Was it important to you that this be addressed?
It was. And there were questions about it because sometimes what people don’t say has more gravitas than what is spoken. We talked about it a lot. But in the end, we felt that admission had been earned.
Do you have any lingering questions about Bosco?
The thing that will probably come out later about this character is what Lisbon might have done on his behalf in regards to police work that perhaps wasn’t completely above board. When our characters were first working together, something happened that we share as a secret. I have a feeling he may have done something to a bad guy that ensured he wouldn’t be able to continue.
How were you celebrated on your final day?
On my last day I was in the hospital bed and (show creator) Bruno Heller came to the set late at night. Everyone gathered and it was very moving. I really got that they wanted me to stay, but the integrity of that arc had to be honored.
Why knock off this integral character?
They wanted a temporary spice between my character and Simon Baker’s (Patrick Jane), but ultimately the gravity of the search for Red John had to be realized.
Did you receive a cake with a big red smiley face on it?
(Laughs) You know, when I came to do my last episode, I saw the wall with the smiley face, and I went ‘Ah f—.’ Actually, they gave me a bottle of champagne that I won’t touch. I’m just going to leave it in my refrigerator to remember them by.
The episode also marked Gregory Itzin’s farewell as Lisbon’s boss, Virgil Minelli. Did you get to know him well?
I did. What a lovely guy. He was incredibly sad. When he left, he brought me a little straw fedora because he noticed I always wear hats. But he just dropped it in my trailer. He didn’t stop to say ‘goodbye’. He took off. Everyone said that when he was done he slipped out the back door because I think he was sad about it. I did the opposite. I went around hugging everybody forever until they were probably like, ‘Get out – you’re dead!’
So Greg wasn’t expecting this?
I think he was as surprised as anybody. I don’t know that his character was meant to be finite. We did joke with each other about our leaving – who goes first? And if either of us was going to get a monologue.
Last question. If you had to guess who Red John is, who would you guess?
I always felt it should be a very handsome, and well-to-do person. And played by someone well known to us.
So maybe you, coming back as Bosco’s long-lost twin?
A guy with a little more hair and glasses… Oh no. We talked about that, but I just got a laugh.

The Mentalist – Syndicated to TNT
Posted by: | CommentsPatrick Jane should have a good feel about this: CBS’ sophomore drama “The Mentalist” has netted a rich off-network syndication deal with TNT.
TV studios should feel good too. The off-network syndication market is heating up again, with two young dramas, “Mentalist” and another CBS procedural, “NCIS: Los Angeles,” on Thursday selling for more than $2 million an episode after healthy bidding.
According to the pact between TNT and Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution, “Mentalist” will begin running weekly on the cable network in fall 2011, followed by a full-blown launch in 2012.
Neither side would discuss the financials of the deal, but the Simon Baker starrer is said to have fetched from $2.2 million-$2.3 million an episode.
“The demand for the off-network rights (to ‘Mentalist’) began almost immediately following its debut on CBS last fall and has steadily increased as the show blossomed into a true broadcast hit,” WBDTD president Ken Werner said.
“Mentalist” launched as the top new series of the 2008-09 season and has been a solid ratings performer this fall in its new 10 p.m. Thursday slot.
“The early success of the series indicates ‘The Mentalist’ has a great future,” Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin said.
The economic downturn and a glut of procedurals have pushed down off-network prices from the heights of late 2004, when Spike TV shelled out a record $1.9 million an episode for CBS’ “CSI: NY.” That was followed by the USA Network/Bravo pact for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” for nearly $2 million an episode and the current record-holder, A&E’s deal for “The Sopranos,” valued at $2.5 million an episode.
Although “Mentalist” and “NCIS: LA,” whose sale prices are said to be in the same range, couldn’t match the New Jersey mobsters’ loot, they still posted a record for a broadcast series’ off-network sale.
By comparison, another solidly performing CBS procedural, “Criminal Minds,” was sold to A&E and Ion last year for a combined license fee of about $850,000 an episode.
On TNT, a corporate sibling of the show’s producer Warner Bros. TV, “Mentalist” will join a slate of off-network procedurals that includes “Law & Order,” “Bones” and fellow CBS series “Without a Trace,” “Cold Case” and “Numbers.”
Created by Bruno Heller, “Mentalist” stars Baker as an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation who solves crimes using razor-sharp observation skills.
With its light tone and quirky central character, “Mentalist” had been considered a good fit for USA, which is said to have been interested but ultimately went aggressively after “NCIS: LA” to complete its “NCIS” off-network franchise. “Mentalist” also might have been considered too similar to USA’s original series “Psych.”
TNT has been an active buyer lately, also acquiring the WBTV-produced cop drama “Southland” after it was canceled by NBC.

‘The Mentalist’ Season 2 Episode 5 Spooky Death
Posted by: | CommentsNext week on “The Mentalist“, the CBI team investigates the death of a wealthy man whom witnesses say was killed by a ghost haunting his mansion. “Red Scare” is slated to air on Thursday, October 29 with Terry Kinney and Gregory Itzin recurring as Sam Bosco and Virgil Minelli respectively.

Several suspects are quickly drawn to determine who or what killed Alan Foster. There is the old mansion’s previous owner, Victoria Abner, who believes in anything spiritual. She is the granddaughter of the original owner of Greystone Mansion who was unable to pay her taxes on property and was forced to sell the mansion. Victoria got bitter from it, believing that she was robbed off a family legacy.
Then there’s Victoria’s adolescent son Drew who is also not pleased with the family legacy snatched away from him. The CBI also questions a local resident by the name of Jeb Haas who has been stealing lumber from the mansion.
In respective order, Frances Fisher, Michael McMillian and Derk Cheetwood guest star as Victoria, Drew and Jeb.
The show is adding a new regular to the CBI team in early 2010, TV Guide magazine reported. No actress has been cast yet but the character named Agent Beth Scott has been prepared. She is an African American woman who is “a veteran in the California Bureau of Investigations headquarters”.

The Mentalist Preview: “Red Badge”
Posted by: | Comments
On Thursday’s episode of The Mentalist, Teresa Lisbon is in trouble.
A pedophile she arrested, and who was recently paroled is found dead. Lison’s fingerprints are on the gun’s magazine and she’s the prime suspect in the murder.
Naturally, Jane and the CBI team set out to prove their colleague’s innocence. Watch the official CBS trailer for “Red Badge below,” followed by a few episode stills from the hour:
The Mentalist – Jane’s Dad Casted
Posted by: | CommentsTalk about playing mind games. The Mentalist is finally introducing Patrick Jane’s father, but it’s doing so via flashback.
In the CBS smash’s Nov. 12 episode, Nick Chinlund (Desperate Housewives, The Sopranos) will make his debut as Simon Baker’s TV dad, Alex, in a series of circa ’80s flashbacks that promise to shed light on Jane’s early days as a carnie freak.
According to a Mentalist insider, we’ll come to learn that young Jane (played by relative newcomer Chris Brochu) worked as a psychic at carnivals under the watchful eye of his overbearing showman dad.
Could this flashback-heavy ep be foreshadowing a present-day visit from Pa Jane — assuming he’s still alive? A Mentalist rep declined to comment, but I’ll go out on a limb and say duh.
